How To Transition To Gray Hair With Lowlights, Per Hairstylists

gray hair highlighting

Go for a refined and sophisticated shoulder-length hairstyle with dark gray highlights to look equally stunning every day and at parties and formal occasions. Here is an ashier take on the trending milk tea hair color, which melts subdued blonde, brown, and gray tones into a yummy cold brew hue. Blend metallic brown highlights and bright silver-gray babylights for elevated grace and elegance. As radiant as sun-kissed hair goes, this amazing mix of silver and gray highlights on the medium-length black hair is one of the best. The shimmering highlighted ends are a showstopper.

Curlights

If you have naturally curly hair and want to rock a short bob, go for it! Just keep in mind that curly hair tends to shrink as it dries, so opt for a slightly longer cut than what you're aiming for. With a few strategically placed layers and face-framing pieces, a curly gray bob is a low-maintenance hairstyle that looks fun and charming. Plus, the natural variations in gray tones will make your curls even more eye-catching. Applying both highlights and lowlights to gray hair can add natural depth to the color of your gray hair.

How to Moisturize Starter Locs and What to Use to Hydrate Locs

You want an even balance by applying just the right mix of highs and lows to be equally dispersed across the dark gray and white hair. Keep scrolling to learn all about blending gray hair with highlights. Luckily, the industry has evolved, and we’ve now got some amazing products to help keep that color in. There are shampoos and conditioners specifically made for gray hair.

Short Cuts That Highlight Gray Hair & Bring Timeless Elegance

Think of lowlights as essentially the opposite of highlights but even lower-key in terms of what your hair has to go through to reach the desired end result. These amazing gray highlights took a hair color that would have sat limply on her skin tone and transformed it into an exquisite balayage that beautifully set off her complexion. Here we have dark brown hair totally transformed into a dimensional smokey look where a violet tinge gives way to silver shimmer invoked by seamlessly blended highlights. Micro-fine highlights – aka babylights – are ideal for clients hoping to veil over a low volume of wispy grays. They mimic the sun-dappled, natural highlights you used to get on childhood vacations, and are just delicate enough to blend small, silver strands away.

With lowlights, the case is similar – opt for lowlights that are cool, ash, or neutral in tone. Steer away from warm, golden, or mahogany tones. You want the color to compliment your natural gray hair which is typically cooler and ash in tone. The choice of colors that you will use to blend your gray hair with highlights and lowlights is the most important element of the puzzle. If you want your new blonde highlights to blend well with your silvery gray hairs, think cool tones rather than warm, buttery blonde tones.

The hand-painted technique adds natural-looking highlights that seamlessly blend with your gray hair, giving you a sun-kissed glow that lasts all year round. The honeyed balayage look is perfect if you’re going for an effortless beachy vibe. Where to find an experienced hair colorist that you can trust with your gray hair? Our team will eagerly help you cover your gray hair or map out a plan on how to transition to gray blending – all you have to do is find one of our locations near you.

When choosing which highlight and lowlight tones you want to end up with, Kusero says it’s important to pay attention to your other features — namely your eye color and skin tone. For anyone who has cool-toned skin and blue eyes, he recommends keeping your highlights and lowlights cool-toned as well, as it will complement your other features. In the same vein, then, people with warmer skin tones and those of us who have brown eyes might consider going a bit warmer, complementing their gray with gold-beige tones for the best result. Again, this is something your colorist will be able to help you with if you need direction. It’s worth noting that blending gray hair may sometimes be confused with gray coverage, but the two are not the same.

A fun short hairstyle for anyone who wants to rock their natural hair is a short bob with wispy bangs that will help highlight your gray hair and add dimension. Gray hair looks gorgeous with a number of different haircuts, but one category that pairs particularly well with gray hair is short hairstyles. If hair color is applied to the whole head, most people have to at least do a root touchup every four weeks.

gray hair highlighting

For coverage on heavier regrowth, you can also paint the babylights back-to-back, like @vivid.af did (below), so there’s almost no gap between each ribbon. If you don’t want to color your grays or walk around with gray roots, highlights are an ideal way to ease into the process. And as a bonus, highlights can add a lot of depth and dimension to your hair, making you look more vibrant and youthful. Yes, gray or silver highlights can be tricky to maintain. Bear in mind this hair dye fades faster than others, so you may want to wash your hair less frequently.Instead of washing your hair every day, do it two to three times a week. The beauty and durability of your highlights depend on the effort you put into maintenance.

While it speeds their day, it’s not in your highlights’ best interest if you’re making a style change. “The universal rule is to keep highlights within four shades of your base color — any more can look harsh,” says Papanikolas. “At the lightest end brunettes should opt for caramel, auburns for copper gold and blondes or grays can go to baby blonde.

Gray highlights work on short hair just as they do on long hair. If you have a pixie cut, there’s no reason not to sport these highlights as well. Here’s another example of beautiful salt and pepper hair.

And there’s also more visibility around celebrating them too. However you decide to tweak, color, or not color your grays, a polished hairstyle will help elevate your look, no matter what. "Having a good blowout or style, regardless of color, will always make an impact," Josh says.

While a hairstyle like this certainly isn't everyone's cup of tea, those who rock it definitely exude extravagance and coolness. If you're considering a pixie cut but find it intimidating, we suggest going for a slightly longer and softer version with side-swept bangs. Since your hair will be longer in the front but shorter in the back, all the different shades of gray you have will be in the spotlight. We've got you thinking about taking a trip to the salon for a freshening up now. And you're in luck, because there is no shortage of gorgeous options to consider this season. "Warmth is back for 2022," says colorist Matt Rez of the brondes, caramels, and gold-spun shades that are giving hair a richer feel right now.

“Lowlights will also help fight against any unwanted yellow tones that can happen when you have gray coming through,” says Naselli. He suggests a demi-permanent formula where possible, and semi-permanent dyes are an option, too. “Lowlights are a great way to ease into the process,” says Naselli of going fully gray. You might be surprised by how low-maintenance this technique can be.

How to Blend Highlights and Lowlights for Gray Hair

This technique involves the application of both highlights and balayage to blend in the gray strands with your natural hair color. Want to add warmth and dimension to your gray tresses? Blending warm caramel highlights throughout your gray hair creates a harmonious blend of contrasting tones that warms your overall appearance.

How to Find Infallible Foundation Shades That Match Your Skin Tone

Pick muted salt-and-pepper highlights for a more natural look. They will look especially amazing on medium-length hair. Get away from a dull black color and play with lights by simply getting ash and bronze babylights.

More Tips to Disguise Gray Hair with Highlights

Typically put in a foil, highlights and lowlights also help blend in the natural hair color while getting a full-coverage style color. Something as simple as creatively placed foils can easily mask your gray hair and grow-out for longer than just your basic root retouch formula from the salon. Not every colorist or salon does both, so know the benefits of each. Foils are more traditional and produce balanced symmetrical highlights uniformly from roots to ends.

Whether you’re seeking techniques for gray blending on dark hair or want help transitioning slate roots into silvery balayage, we’ve got the tips you need. Keep reading as we share how to blend gray hair with highlights and lowlights, how to find the right colors, and more. Gray blending is a great option for those who want to embrace their incoming grays without committing to a drastic hair color change.

Playground Highlights

She researches hairstyle & hair color trends, tests the latest haircare tools and products to help people take the right decision. For instance, ash gray and cool-toned blondes can camouflage grays into a tonal masterpiece that bounces light away from the grays and makes the whole thing look effortlessly deliberate. Our experts weren't hot on the idea of DIY highlighting.

Brunettes who are transitioning to full-on gray, often have a harsh demarcation line separating their light roots and dark ends. For a softer, more seamless look, a gloss is a great option. "A demi gloss color will either enhance warmth or cool all your hairs down," says Reid. "This won't block out the gray, but adds a beautiful refinement to your existing color (and it would grow out with no harsh lines)." This polished bixie might demand a bit more styling, but the payoff is pure elegance in your natural gray shade.

You’ll also get a more obvious regrowth line, so expect a touch-up every six to eight weeks for maintenance. In balayage, the highlights are painted by hand directly on the hair in varying widths with the color in a gradient ombré progression from dark to light. Thanks to the seamless grow-out, there’s no redo for three or four months. Balayage works best on tousled layers, lobs and shoulder-length or longer hair. Note that some salons and social media sites are pushing a combo called “foilayage,” with hand-painted highlights and wrapped in foil.

When done correctly, gray blending can help your silvery strands appear less obvious, ensure a smoother transition into gray hair, and soften a harsh line of demarcation at the root. Once upon a time, spotting your first gray hair meant immediately plucking it or scheduling a dye job to conceal your changing hue. Nowadays, more and more people are relying on gray blending to usher in their gray hair era. This modern coloring approach intentionally merges your silvers into your base color to help camouflage your grays without the need to commit to a full-head dye job.

A sun-kissed look is perfect for those contemplating a subtle change. Delicate highlights, only a shade or two lighter than your natural gray, gently frame your face, creating a natural radiance that mimics the way the sun brightens your hair over time. This soft and understated approach allows you to embrace your gray while adding a youthful glow. Balayage, the technique creates light and shade throughout your hair. Sweeping sections of highlights are blended seamlessly in among other strands to break up blocks of color and ensure hair looks multidimensional.

We like the L’Oréal Paris Magic Root Cover Up for its quick application and its lightweight formula that lasts until your next shampoo. Simply spritz some on your roots and comb throughout your lengths to blend and your color will look instantly refreshed. A haircare system specifically designed to maintain the vibrancy and longevity of color-treated and gray hair can keep your mane in prime condition. The nourishing shampoo gently cleanses gray and silver hair without stripping moisture, while the enriching conditioner helps strands appear bright and healthy-looking.

Have you noticed that your gray hair has a different, coarser texture to it? This is because the cells that produce your hair color have run their course, as well as your hair follicles, produce less hydrating oils. Adding a gloss to your grays will actually help to soften your hair. Typically, glosses are very moisturizing and shiny. They do add a little bit of dimension because they do not go all the way inside the hair strand.

Changes to your hair's texture (including thinning or increased fall-out) can be distressing, and you might not be sure which products will help prevent hair loss while still protecting existing strands. To help you pick the top contenders from the many, MANY options out there, natural haircare experts weighed in on the ones that are basically a spa day for your strands. Ahead, check out a few of the deep conditioners that deserve a spot in your cart.

Dae Monsoon Moisture Mask

Inside this cheerful mint-green bottle is a clinically backed bond-repair conditioner that provides a much-needed boost to dry, damaged, or over-processed hair. It's spiked with the brand's proprietary blend of plant-based proteins and natural butters to nourish and strengthen hair from root to tip. We love how it leaves you with smooth, shiny, polished-looking locks. If your hair needs weekly deep conditioning, this mask will be your new BFF. Unlike other masks, this one won’t leave your hair looking limp and greasy from the additional hydration.

Best Defining Deep Conditioner For Natural Hair

While it's completely hypo-allergenic, its heat-activated formulation induces a warming, tingling sensation on the scalp that mimics the feeling of sitting under a dryer at a salon. Davines' protein-rich hair mask is specifically formulated for curly hair, and Babbit swears by it. "This is one of the most softening products I've ever used, and to be honest, the whole Love range is softening," he gushes. The expert notes that it's gentle enough for use on finer curls, which are more prone to dryness and breakage.

Scotch Porter Restorative Leave-In Beard Conditioner

We totally swear by coconut oil as the best natural ingredient for hair care. It contains fatty acids and Vitamin E – ingredients that moisturize and hydrate hair as well as reduce its damage. Eventually, it facilitates length retention, as it helps you maintain the health of your hair for a longer time and you need a haircut less often. Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen & Restore Treatment Masque is one of the Curly Girl Method approved deep conditioners (Curly Girl Method is a popular modern way of looking after your curly locks).

"Follow the instructions on how long to leave it on," says Jimieson. "Longer is better in some cases but in most cases [it's] unnecessary." "I like to use washing habits (i.e., every other day) as a good baseline for how often to use a deep conditioner," adds Jimieson. The brand says that this mask, which is their bestseller, by the way, should be used once weekly or every two weeks. The brand suggests leaving it on for five to 10 minutes before rinsing it off.

Olaplex No. 3 Hair Repair Perfector

The hair will keep breaking until you reach the healthy part of the hair. As long as your ends are breaking, your hair will not seem like it's growing," she explain. Kobets says yes, but warns to be careful not to overdo it if your hair is fine, saying it will decrease volume and weigh fine hair down. The spray bottle seems pretty easy to take with you (we love a travel-friendly product) and is available in three sizes. Another product option here, she says, is ketoconazole 2% shampoo to help control oiliness and a flaky scalp.

When shopping for a deep conditioner for your hair, Grace says there are some key things you need to keep in mind. Not only should you consider your hair type, but you should also know how to apply your mask to get the best results. "To make an informed choice on a deep conditioner, it’s important to pinpoint [your] specific hair concerns," she explains. This reparative hair mask from Vegamour is one you should have on your radar, especially if you have lots of flyaways and broken ends. It works to smooth, hydrate, and strengthen hair thanks to a formula powered by Karmatin, a vegan silk alternative to keratin and silicone. Unlike other bonding shampoos, Karmatin stays locked onto strands, bonding them together, rather than washing out with water.

For those with thick hair, you’ll want to try out this treatment mask from Ouai—it’s free from sulfates, revives damaged and color-treated hair, and adds loads of shine. It has a warm coconut, amber, and vanilla scent to take your conditioning treatment to the next level, enveloping you in a relaxing aromatic shower. The formula is lightweight but extremely hydrating and keeps your hair silky and full of body.

We like that it leaves hair not only moisturized but also super shiny and silky-soft to the touch. “Make sure your products do not have harmful sulfates and parabens,” says Oberg. “If so, they can cause buildup on the hair creating a waxy and tacky texture.” A sulfate-free deep conditioner is also essential for anyone with color-treated hair. Be sure to peruse the ingredients list to confirm whether a formula is suited to your hair type and texture. Amino acids help with breakage, bamboo extract improves hair growth and strand strength, and shea or cocoa butter will give a silky smooth feel to the hair.

Whether you have highlights or a full-on platinum dye job, Bust Your Brass is great for moisturizing chemically lightened hair and neutralizing any brassy, orange hues. It features rich purple pigments to color-correct brass, as well as a bonding complex to help strengthen hair and target damage. Some reviewers note that if you leave the treatment on too long, the formula can turn hair purple, depending on porosity, so be sure to monitor appropriately.

Although I have a few of my own favorites I swear by, I tapped a few celebrity stylists to get their recs because, well, they're the experts. If you're in the market for a solid option in this department, keep reading for what they had to share below. It works on all hair types and textures, from stick-straight and fine to coarse and curly.

Spray options are beyond convenient for quick application and less mess. This spray leave-in treatment from SheaMoisture is easy on the wallet and easy to apply (spray it on damp hair, starting midway down to detangle and address frizz). Richards suggests investing in a leave-in conditioner and heat protectant for hydration. Ryan Babbitt is a hairstylist with a passion for educating his clients about how to keep their hair healthy and well-maintained.

Formulated to restore natural curl patterns and tight textures, the Pattern Intensive Conditioner is jam-packed with hydrating ingredients—like avocado oil and shea butter—to define, revive, and protect curls and coils. It was created specifically for low porosity hair, which often struggles to hold onto moisture. The texture is rich and creamy, and we love that it comes in multiple sizes, including a jumbo with a convenient pump.

Living Proof No Frizz Intense Moisture Hair Mask

Mielle Organics is an organic hair care line that is made with ingredients you know and love. The Babassu Oil Mint Deep Conditioner has become a fan favorite for its quick-penetrating formula and drugstore-friendly price point. Even those with low-porosity hair rave that the babassu oil helps to smooth brittle ends and reduce breakage. Ahead, find the best deep conditioners for an array of curl patterns and textures. Depending on the conditioner, deep conditioners work best on damp hair and should sit on the head for anywhere from 10 minutes to overnight.

SheaMoisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Hair Masque

London salon Bleach is known for its dramatic and colourful transformations, so no one understands the importance of rescuing hair compromised by bleach and dyes more than they do. This mask uses vegetable and wheat protein to repair and strengthen while sunflower seed extract maintains softness. Moisture is the name of the game with the Dae Monsoon Moisture Mask, featuring a band of oils and desert botanicals that strengthen and hydrate each hair as soon as you apply it. Fittingly, the product’s fragrance is inspired by the scent of a rain-touched desert. Bolster limp locks with this strengthening, leave-in conditioner, fortified with biotin and rosemary mint.

Curlsmith Hydro Crème Soothing Mask

This one is great for fine and thinning hair because it's soft and creamy without being too rich. It's formulated with a protein complex that can help with hair growth and maintaining a healthy microbiome on the scalp. It's not ideal for those with very damaged hair as it doesn't have bonding technology or a rich, smoothing formula, but it's great for those looking to condition fine hair and help encourage growth. This multi-use formula from L'Oréal can be used as a co-wash, rinse-out mask, or leave-in treatment.

"Tight curls require the most amount of moisture in order to reach strands that spiral together," says Redway. It's made with curly hair in mind—especially damaged, dry hair that's in need of an immediate pick-me-up. Used correctly, deep conditioners will hydrate and define your curls alongside your favorite curly hair products.

Oribe Moisture & Control Deep Treatment Masque

Polished Gentleman sells a set of the two to make your search that much easier, especially if you’re looking for a conditioner that emphasizes hydration and will leave your beard feeling soft and smooth. It gently yet thoroughly cleanses the beard and skin underneath, removing dirt, oil, and buildup, and helps stimulate beard follicles, promoting a thicker, fuller, and healthier beard. Oftentimes, trying to make your hair grow faster feels like a Sisyphean task, regardless of how many hair growth vitamins and hair growth serums you incorporate into your daily routine. When your hair is damaged and brittle, you might find that it breaks off long before it can reach its full potential—and you’re not alone. While I’ve had virgin hair all my life, I’ve seen friends who bleach and double-process their strands struggle with this problem firsthand.

Our best overall pick is Camille Rose Naturals Algae Renew Deep Conditioning Mask, which contains 65 vitamins, biotin, and a blend of natural butters to leave hair soft and shiny while promoting growth. For a more affordable option, consider the drugstore classic Aussie 3-Minute Miracle with jojoba and avocado oils to add weightless moisture. CHI's Keratin Leave-In Conditioner is a lightweight no-rinse option that's great for applying right after washing your hair because it helps detangle, nourish, and strengthen every strand. We're big fans of the formula, which boasts a keratin-infused blend to repair the hair cuticle, improve elasticity, and protect against future breakage. It has a strong perfumey scent, which we don't love, so those who are sensitive to fragrance or perfumes might want to opt out of this one.

it's a 10 Miracle Deep Conditioner Plus Keratin

To use this product, skip your regular conditioner and stick with a simple shampoo routine. After getting out of the shower, gently dry your hair and apply a dime-sized amount of the leave-in mask from root to tip. Let the mask work its magic for four minutes and proceed with styling as usual. Anyone with bleached hair can attest that long-term processing can cause your hair to become brittle, dry, and damaged.

This one from Fekkai has a blend of natural Shea Butter, Monoi Oil, and botanical extracts to tackle dry hair and frizz and help hair retain lasting hydration. Although you can't easily walk back years of heat damage from hair tools, this one helps soften the blow with a nourishing, fragrance-free and hypoallergenic oat formula – even sensitive skin types can enjoy! "I have bleached hair so my hair is pretty damaged," comments one reviewer. "This conditioner hydrates really well without weighing down my fine hair." Angel Cardona, a top stylist with Sebastian Professional, explains why this is the extra step your haircare routine might be missing. "A deep conditioner tends to be a thicker, richer, stronger conditioning treatment that will strengthen, repair, and/or hydrate your hair," he says.

The brand’s mix of fortifying oils prevents excessive shedding and frizz and is completely sulfate-free. It’s like a drink for your whiskers— quenching their thirst and leaving them gleaming with a softness that’s nothing but silky luxe. For this piece, beauty writer Carol Lee spoke with trusted hair experts about hair growth. She also searched the internet for top-rated hair masks for growth, perused reviews for dozens of popular options, and evaluated each on their features and customer reviews.

It’s no secret that the mask hydrates and revives hair, but it also restores hair to its virgin state (think pre-platinum blond and using your straightener daily) by reducing split ends and smoothing the hair overall. The fig ingredient added to the formula naturally detangles and heals damage, and pesky split ends. When dry hair, split ends, and limp strands show up, your hair is telling you it needs some TLC. It's anyone's guess, but using hot styling tools, heavy products, and coloring your hair are likely culprits. The Redken Extreme Bleach Recovery Leave-In Conditioner is a post-shower, leave-in treatment that nourishes each strand to strengthen and improve hair resilience between each coloring session.

Guide to Visiting

mark twain house hartford ct

Taking the pen name Mark Twain, Samuel Clemens wrote his most famous novels in this house, including The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. On a bustling city street in downtown Hartford, Connecticut, the Mark Twain House & Museum offers a vibrant, intimate look at the Clemens family during some of their happiest days. Children between the ages of 2 and 6 are welcome on the hour-long tour; in fact, they get in free! However, a parent with a loud or disruptive child may be asked to leave the tour if the noise is detracting from the experience for others.

However, the patterned surfaces, ornamental trusses, and large decorative brackets are characteristics of another Victorian style known as Stick. But, unlike most Stick Style buildings, the Mark Twain house is constructed of brick instead of wood. Some of the bricks are painted orange and black to create intricate patterns on the facade. Their home measures 11‚500 square feet‚ and has 25 rooms distributed through three floors.

Collections include some 50,000 items belonging to the author and his family. Offered daily, our living history tours are an immersive experience that allow you to explore a slice of life in the Clemens household. Meet the family and friends that shaped Mark Twain’s day to day life and celebrate the hardworking servants that kept the household running, ask questions face to face, and hear their stories in their own words. Led by an actor portraying a member of the household, each tour is about 70 minutes and includes opportunities not available on a general house tour. The twenty-five-room Gothic Revival, “stick-style” mansion mimicking exposed framing is a National Historic Landmark. The massive house is 11‚500 square feet and has 25 rooms on three floors.

In between the two venues is Olana, Vaux's Persian-inspired design built in 1872 in Hudson, New York. Note how architect Edward Tuckerman Potter uses a variety of architectural detail to make the Mark Twain House visually interesting. The house, built in 1874, is constructed with a variety of brick patterns as well as brick color patterns. Adding these decorative brackets in the cornice creates as much excitement as a plot twist in a Mark Twain novel.

Timeline

Yet the design continues to astonish visitors to staid Hartford, Connecticut, long known as "the insurance capital of the world." The similarities are striking, with colored bricks and stenciling inside and out. In architecture, the popular is usually what gets built and surely it's what gets adapted by the eager architect. Perhaps Vaux himself was familiar with the Nott Memorial in Schenectady, the domed structure Potter designed in 1858. Edward Tuckerman Potter, the design architect of the Mark Twain House, would have known about Olana, the Hudson River Valley mansion that architect Calvert Vaux was building for painter Frederic Church. Potter's architecture practice was centered in his hometown of Schenectady, New York, and the Mark Twin House was built in 1874 in Hartford, Connecticut.

Please note the museum is closed on Easter Sunday, July 4th, Thanksgiving Day, December 24, December 25, and January 1.

The facade’s red brick masonry features stringcourses and other decorative patterning made from black- and vermilion-colored brick. The building is crowned with a patterned, tricolor slate tile roof and four chimneystacks featuring the same polychrome brickwork as the rest of the house. The Clemens family later added a servants’ wing on the northwest side.

The  overhanging eaves, brackets, and second-story balcony may be slightly more modest than the author's home, but the elements are there for Twain's beloved coachman, Patrick McAleer. From 1874 until 1903, McAleer and his family lived in the Carriage House to serve the Clemens family. Tours include the restored kitchen wing and butler’s pantry, allowing visitors to experience the rooms as the Clemens' servants did. The modern, LEED certified museum center features orientation and changing exhibition galleries, a Ken Burns documentary and The Nook Café, serving sandwiches, salads and other light fare. The Mark Twain House & Museum is pleased to welcome visitors through our Library Membership Program. A library membership pass is available, in partnership with local libraries, to offer patrons discounted admission to the museum.

In September the family – now with the addition of baby Clara – moved into the house, beginning a period of 16 years that both Mark and Livy considered their happiest, and the world in general sees as Mark Twain’s most productive. Life there has been recorded by the author himself in his lively memoir “A Family Sketch” and in multiple pages of his autobiography. While a small group of us waited for our official tour to start, we idled through a small museum across the hall. It contains an old printing press machine Twain invested in, some typesetting and letterpress equipment and his old desk. The museum displays various items like his glasses, pipes, tin boxes, and writing utensils. The Mark Twain House and Museum in Hartford, Connecticut, was his home from 1874 to 1891.

I stopped at the homes of many writers including Flannery O’Connor, John Steinbeck, Edgar Allan Poe and others, and this wasn’t to be missed. Aside from being a prolific and beloved author, I admire Twain for his love of travel, innovation and dry observations of humanity. The community’s end came, in large part, with Twain’s departure to Europe in 1891, when financial problems forced him to close the house. Both Twain and Stowe’s homes, and part of the Nook Farm estate, have since become national landmarks.

This freely available resource empowers the public with authoritative knowledge that deepens their understanding and appreciation of the built environment. The long room, with its plant-filled glass conservatory at one end, is overlooked by a vast carved chimneypiece  Here the Clemenses would enjoy a light supper after a trip to New York, or play with the kids, or read quietly. Or, as daughter Susy described, Papa would read his manuscripts aloud and Mama took the opportunity to “expergate” them; or, as daughter Clara described, Papa would make up tales using the bric-a-brac on the mantel. But here in Hartford is a wonderful chimera of a house, surmounted by Elizabethan chimneys and dotted with balconies.

Mark Twain lived here for almost twenty years and some of his best-known works, including Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, were actually written in this house. Nook Farm’s other Beecher family connections included Mary Beecher Perkins, married to lawyer Thomas Clap; and Harriet Foote, a cousin to the Beecher sisters, whose husband was Joseph Roswell Hawley. Hawley was a North Carolina native who came north to attend college, became an editor of The Hartford Evening Press and then The Hartford Courant when the two newspapers consolidated.

The picturesque, historicist design of the exterior concealed the fact that the house’s amenities were quite modern. It featured gas lighting and a total of seven bathrooms with running water and flush toilets. The billiard room on the third floor also served as the author’s office and study. The Webster Bank Museum Center at the Mark Twain House & Museum is always your first and last stop as it houses our ticket counter, museum store, film, and café. All tours gather in the museum center before heading over to Mark Twain’s historic 1874 home.

Proceeds from the store support the upkeep and restoration of Twain’s historic home and its programs. It includes over 200,000 items of art, furniture, memorabilia, manuscripts and visual media to illustrate Stowe’s life. During his lifetime, he’d lost a toddler son, two daughters and his wife. In his final years, he sold this house, where he’d spent his happiest years and moved into something smaller elsewhere in Connecticut. Then, in 1910, Halley’s Comet returned after seventy-four years, and Twain departed to meet it again.

Tours enter the house from the porte-cochere into a darkish entry hall whose lighting, meant to imitate the subtlety of gaslight, reflects a profusion of silvery stencil on the walls – a careful reproduction of Tiffany’s and his crew’s décor. Her father, Jervis Langdon, a wealthy coal and timber magnate of Elmira, had given the newlyweds a house in Buffalo. But a combination of tragic events – the deaths of Jervis, and then of a friend of Livy’s – and a general dissatisfaction with Buffalo got the couple thinking of Hartford. To this day, classic Victorian conservatories add value, charm, and stature to a home. Check them out online, like Tanglewood Conservatories, Inc. in Denton, Maryland.

The house became a boys’ school and then an apartment building before being rescued in 1929 by the Friends of Hartford, which established the Mark Twain Memorial and Library Commission to restore the house to its original appearance. Arriving by BusCT Transit buses 60, 62, 64, and 66 connect The Mark Twain House & Museum with downtown Hartford and West Hartford Center. A transit shelter is located adjacent to the museum at Farmington Avenue and Woodland Street. Ghost tours are offered seasonally and are available by reservation only.

Please note that the parking lot entrance is located a few hundred feet to the west of the Mark Twain House itself. The Mark Twain House is three floors with 41 stairs up to the billiard room and 40 stairs back down to the kitchen. The Webster Bank Museum Center at the Mark Twain House & museum is fully wheelchair accessible.

Restoration of the house began in 1963, the same year the house was designated a National Historic Landmark. Since then, extensive historical research has supported further projects to restore the house to its 1891 appearance. The museum store is open during normal museum hours and features Twain memorabilia, gifts for the reader and writer, and a large selection of books by and about Mark Twain.

We encourage parents use their discretion on whether a tour is right for their child. Thank you so much for your interest in a group tour at the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center! As construction got under way, the Clemenses promptly departed on a European trip. When they returned, the family stayed in Hartford only a few months before departing for a summer in Elmira, where daughter Clara was born in June.

There would have been at least 15 people in this house at any given time when Twain wrote. The children’s schoolroom – surely a disruption – was right next door. It was a good reminder that creativity – or anything we wish to achieve – doesn’t stem from a place in the woods, isolation on the beach, or perfect conditions.

Mark Twain’s Office

Just as its individual personalities were unique, so, too, was the Nook Farm neighborhood. Its grand Victorian homes were open and accessible to each other on pathways winding through the broad estate. The residents would often dine together and enjoy fireside discussions until the early hours of the morning. An evening may have starred one of the Clemens girls giving a piano recital or an informal concert by Susan Lee Warner, a superb pianist who helped start the Hartford Philharmonic Orchestra. Whist-playing among couples was frequent, and a “Friday Evening Club” pulled neighborhood pool players to Twain’s billiards room.

He was a Civil War general in the Union army who returned to Connecticut to serve as governor, congressman, and then, for 24 years, senator. Born in Litchfield, Stowe spent her teenage years in Hartford, where she lived at the Hartford Female Seminary, opened by Catharine, the eldest Beecher sibling. In returning to Hartford as an adult, Stowe came home to family, and from the beginning, familial ties fueled much of Nook Farm’s growth and vitality. And Hooker’s wife was Harriet’s half-sister, Isabella, one of the most vehement of Nook Farm’s personalities. From there down the back stairs to the kitchen, with its great iron stove and its pass-through to a little gem of a butler’s pantry, where Griffin received the plated dishes from the cook. He carried  these out to family and guests at the table, bringing us full circle back to the ornate dining room.

Livy’s Windows: How the Hartford House Began

Four Seasons Sunrooms calls their Victorian Conservatory with Wood Interior simply a four seasons sunroom. This first floor room of the Hartford, Connecticut home was a kind of family room, where Samuel Clemens would entertain his family and guests with his famous stories. Here’s a look at my visit to the Mark Twain House in the summer of 2016. My thanks to Deb Cohen for assisting with my visit, and to Steve Courtney and his book The Loveliest Home That Ever Was for the information in the captions below.

Sometimes, it’s good to see that the most accomplished among us got that way through fortitude and discipline as much as any special skills they may have had. Twain struck a chord in American consciousness by being relatable, funny and human. Seeing his house and work environment is a reminder that he was, in many ways, just like us. Up another flight of stairs is the children’s schoolroom – they were home-schooled – more bedrooms and Twain’s office.

For private homes, the conservatory room was a sure sign of affluence and culture. For the Mark Twain House in Hartford, the exterior of the conservatory room became a fine architectural addition that complemented the nearby turret. The library at the Mark Twain house is typical of Victorian colors and interior design of the day. Before he became famous for his novels, Samuel Clemens ("Mark Twain") married into a wealthy family.

Twain delighted the masses with his first and most famous travel stories, including “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” and “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” both of which he wrote while living in Hartford. If you take a tour, you can see where he sat to write them and the windows from which he gazed. When Harriet Beecher Stowe moved her large family to Hartford and built a home at Nook Farm in 1864, it had been a dozen years since the publication of her nation-changing book, Uncle Tom’s Cabin; or, Life among the Lowly. The powerful anti-slavery novel, published across the globe, was to become the best-selling book of the 19th century. In addition to selling millions of copies, the book inspired frequent dramatizations throughout the United States in the 1850s, making Stowe a household name.

Period-appropriate furniture and accessories fill the house, but our guide said only 10 percent of the objects in the house are original to the Twain family. We go upstairs in the museum, where art galleries feature objects inspired by Twain’s work. There’s also a small café if you’d like a latte in view of the famed house. Inside the theatre, an excellent 22-minute film about Twain’s life is a great primer to remind us why he is one of America’s most revered writers.

You can practically place this wine cabinet anywhere, may it be in the entryway or dining room. The left half side is enclosed with double mesh doors and a magnetic latch to keep things inside visible and secure. The upper side of this half has a stemware rack suitable for storing about eight glasses. The right half side is divided into three, where you can place the two wine racks to hold ten bottles. Unlike most tall and vertical wine cabinets, this one is horizontal, otherwise known as buffet or sideboard.

Artelium uses a well-designed winery website with images to bring the center stage to you. This wine website features a wine shop advertising sophisticated thrills in bottles. We are an urban Tapas & Wine Bar with a young a vibrant team, modern and traditional spanish wines and a newly yet traditional interpretation of spanish finger food. We are trying to reinvent the traditional, giving it a new twist in recipes as well as in vibrant decor ideas etc. We are looking for a modern design that shows some reflection of the old ways and the tradition in craft and products.

Los Angeles

The shop can display up to 2,200 wines at once, a feat for such a cozy space. “I wanted it to feel like you walked into someone’s kitchen—bright, cozy, inviting—where you would want to sit down and have a glass, or bottle or two, of wine,” says Smith. The wall’s design was the most challenging area of the shop to build, in large part because it also needed to serve as storage.

The founders, Bodvar and Ann Hafstrom, were keen on an aesthetic for their bottles that embodied their five elegant pink-hued wines. “We love to take inspiration from the perfume industry rather than our more traditional wine industry,” says Ann. The Bodvár No. 5, as an example, has a slender shape and wider shoulders while the No. 7 has a rounder body and lean neck. All the wines are refreshing, but some are creamier while others are light and floral-like.

Then there’s the tasting room, constructed in part with 250-year-old floor joists reclaimed from another New York City loft Schagrin remodeled. For Schagrin, as a native of the Stuy Town enclave in Manhattan, it also provides a sense of local history. “It sort of evokes the flow of wine when you pour,” says Schagrin. The curve in the wall allows 600 additional labels of wine to be stocked, for a grand display of 3,000 bottles.

Try to highlight specific areas such as wine racks and any other interesting displays. You can also have an assortment of overhead lights providing general illumination. One of the most important aspects of the design is the lighting. There are two things to consider when deciding what kind of lighting to install. A good idea is to install lights that can change color to reflect the current mood.

Purchase a bottle at the shop and you have the option to take it home or drink it on site. Bottles can also be housed in a special locker for wine lounge members—customers who spend $100 in the shop within a month. Park Avenue Fine Wines opened its doors in 2016 with a sense of historical import that created excitement for the 8,500-square-foot shop, wine bar and lounge. The versatility provides plenty of space for everything from assisting customers to hosting special events and tastings. Private tastings unfold in the newly opened Champagne Room at Golden Age Wine, Thursday night tastings draw crowds at Fiasco!

Glass is also a popular material especially for enclosing smaller under-the-stairs wine cellars. If you need smaller wine storage, there are many options beyond a wine rack. You can have a wine refrigerator small enough for 50 bottles or a bigger one for a couple hundred bottles or more. These vaults are mini-cellars complete with built-in storage and climate control. In figure 1B, there’s one stagnant display table that is telling, instead of showing the customer what to buy, with no incentive for them to buy it. The display table in figure 1B was probably orchestrated through a talented Brand Ambassador who has a good relationship with the liquor store.
